Sourcing for ai hardware at SFbei.

The hard parts of AI hardware are not the accelerators — they are power delivery, thermal, high-speed interconnect and the enclosure that has to pass EMC. All of it is sourced, and most of it is sourced badly.

What actually goes wrong

Three sourcing problems we watch teams hit.

Power delivery at density

Getting kilowatts into a chassis reliably means busbars, high-current connectors and supplies with real derating curves. Vendor selection here is a reliability decision, not a price decision.

Thermal is a supply-chain problem

Cold plates, vapour chambers, high-static-pressure fans and the gap pads between them. Lead times on custom cold plates surprise teams every time.

Signal integrity at the connector

Cable assemblies and backplane connectors decide whether your link trains. Buying them on price is how you end up debugging at 2am.

Where to go

Before you leave

A checklist for
your first visit.

Five things that make the difference between a pleasant walk around and an afternoon that moves your programme forward.

  1. Ask for derating curves at your actual ambient, not the datasheet's 25°C.
  2. Get the connector supplier and the cable-assembly house talking on the same visit.
  3. Bring your thermal budget — cold-plate suppliers can sanity-check it across the bench.
  4. Check EMC gasketing and enclosure finishing together; they interact more than people expect.
  5. Confirm UL/IEC files exist for the exact part number, not the family.
