A collaborative robot arm demonstration cell on the robotics floor

Sourcing for robotics at SFbei.

Robotics programmes live and die on drivetrain lead times and on end-effector decisions nobody can make from a datasheet. Both problems are physical, and both are solved faster standing in front of the hardware.

What actually goes wrong

Three sourcing problems we watch teams hit.

The 26-week reducer

Harmonic and cycloidal reducers are the classic schedule killer. Second-source options exist, but evaluating them means feeling the backlash and seeing the duty curves — not reading a PDF from a company you've never heard of.

End effectors are geometry-specific

No gripper datasheet tells you whether it handles your part. Bring the part; that is what the demo bays are for.

Integration risk hides in the connectors

Slip rings, cable carriers, EtherCAT drives and the hundred small interconnect choices that decide whether your arm survives a million cycles.

Where to go

Your route
through the building.

  • Floor 02

Robot arms, grippers, AMR platforms, controllers, safety

  • Floor 01

Frameless motors, reducers, encoders, force/torque, cabling

  • Floor 03

Machining, castings, sheet metal and finishing for structure

Before you leave

A checklist for
your first visit.

Five things that make the difference between a pleasant walk around and an afternoon that moves your programme forward.

  1. Bring the part you need to pick up — grippers get evaluated on your geometry, not ours.
  2. Ask for duty-cycle curves, not just peak torque. Every reducer supplier on the floor has them.
  3. Compare at least two reducer sources before you commit; second-sourcing is what saves the schedule.
  4. Check the cable-carrier and slip-ring aisle on the same visit — it is where integration surprises live.
  5. Book a demo bay if you want a supplier to run their cell against your workpiece.
